RESURRECTION OF SPIRIT OF MAHATMA

“Ahimso Paramo Dharmah”. Non violence is the highest human endeavor. Let us ponder on this non-violence that is praised in the scriptures as the pinnacle of human attitude and action. This ahimsa ia not just in action as most people think, it is also in thoughts and words. Non violence is an attitude before it translates into human action. In order for the attitude of non-violence to take root in our psyche, we need some level of purity that promotes this expansive feeling in us. One has to expand beyond the limited “me and mine”  to include others human and other beings in our body.

Only through this expansion one feels the pain of others,  as pain to self. Thus they avoid causing pain to themselves as a result of causing pain to others. This is “Bhoota Daya” of Buddha, called Compassion. Compassion is a combination of two words COM + PASSION meaning connected expansion. This compassion that reflects in non-violence stems from our spiritual heart (Atman), not from the mind. This spiritual heart is called “Hridaya” meaning Hri = expansive: Daya = compassion. Expansive compassion is HRIDAYA and attitude of ahimsa emanate from it.

This means that it emanates from our core of being, the spiritual heart, the Atman.  This is what happened to Siddhartha when he encountered the wounded Swan, faced with the sick, aged and confronted with death. This was what transformed limited Siddhartha into expansive Buddha that we still cherish.

Each one of us has this expansion potential in us. We have the Danava tendencies on one hand that derives pleasure on hurting others, feeling happy when others are in pain and Manava tendencies of feeling others pain and Devata tendencies of helping others with no expectation of any returns. It is for us to promote what we want to. Our progressive path should vanquish Danava in us ,resurrect Manava in us and promote Devatas in us to reach our destination of Divinity.

Compassion and ahimsa is the state of full expansion of human potential. When this fully manifest in us we become angels walking on two legs and will be a blessing on earth.  The obstacles for this expansion are the layers of arishadvargas (kama, krodha, lobha, moha, mada and matsaryas) that cover the Hridaya (Atman). Our task as humans is to flush in good expansive qualities of sathya, dharma, santhi, prema, ahimsa and thyaga and purge the  six enemies that restrict and constrict us. Then our spontaneous inherent nature that is compassion, the attitude of non-violence develops.

Truth in action is Dharma
Truth as an emotion is Prema
Truth as an experience is Santhi
Truth as understanding is Ahimsa
Truth as an expression is Thyaga

This is what Gandhiji practiced and preached and dedicated his life to. He called his biography as “My experiments with Truth”. His discovery is Ahimsa that emanated from his experiments with truth. Let each one of us try to dedicate ourselves on this Gandhi Vardhanthi, to our own experiments with truth and discover AHIMSA in us. The greatest tribute we can give to Mahatma is to make our lives the message of Mahatma. Let Mahatma lives through each one of us.

UN-CLOUDING THE INTELLECT - TRANSPARENCY

We are endowed with body, senses and a mind like the animals. We were endowed with an intellect with capability to discriminate. It is this intellect that sets us apart from animal kingdom and makes the humans as the pinnacle of creation. With this intellect a person can realize ones own source and reach that source. Humans also have Atman (localized, contained consciousness) like every other  thing in creation.
The intellect is the reflection of Atman on our mind. This becomes our inner voice that keeps prompting us right and wrong. In some people this intellect is transparent and in others  it is opaque by various degrees. The amount of current opaqueness is the result of  karmic baggage that we bring into this life from past lives and the baggage we added or subtracted in this life. The purpose of all our spiritual practices is to lessen this opaqueness and make it more and more transparent. This is to become like a child. In a self realized person the intellect is 100% transparent and they reflect Atman fully.

The amount of transparency decides the amount of Atmic reflection (exhibited Divinity). If a person is 50% transparent , he will reflect 50% Atman and 75% transparency reflects 75% Atman and with 100% transparency they reflect 100% Atman. The people who reflect 100% transparency, continuously live in Atmic state. These are called Jeevan Muktas like our Ramana Maharshi, Shirdi Sai Baba and Sathya Sai Baba and the like. They function in the world but off the world like the lotus in the mud pool of water.

Another name for this transparency is purity (Chitta Suddhi/ Trikarana Suddhi).  In this purity they will have Atma darshan, meaning vision of Unity, Oneness and connectedness of all of creation. This is integrated vision of universe. This is also labeled as opening of third eye that destroys the normal vision of duality, separateness and brings vision of connectedness and oneness.  In this state “yad bhavam tat bhavathi”  becomes 100%. This is called “sankalpa shakthi”. This is the reason why people seek blessings from pious (transparent ) people. People talk about Rama Baana (Rama’s arrow) which always hits the target. Here Rama symbolizes a jeevan mukta (100% purity/transparent) hence his thoughts manifest in results without fail.  This power of sankalpa shakthi  attainable for all humans provided they successfully make themselves transparent by sadhana. Now the question as sadhakas is how we bring this transparency in our intellect so that we reflect Atma, our true self  well.

This opaqueness is caused by delusion (Maya). This maya has three components namely mala, vikshepa and avarana. Mala is the impurities in us. Viskhepa is the agitations in mind with memories of past and worries about the future.  Avarana is the veiling caused by ignorance, wrong knowledge, mis-information (avidhya) that clouds our mind with a cover.

MALA DOSHA:  Karmic baggage  causes  prarabda, agami and sanchta karmas that results in making the intellect opaque.  Karmic baggage is the result of Arishadvargas (six enemies) namely desire (kama),  anger (krodha), miserliness (lobha), ego (mada) and jealousy (matsarya). These are not human qualities. These are the qualities that we inherited from our phylogenies through animal kingdom. We bring some animal qualities of survival into this life. These qualities, while they help in survival, they become hindrance for  our full blossoming to our potential, to our full expansion to Oneness.

Now the question is how to remove these six enemies. These six animal qualities survive in us in our unawareness. When we bring awareness to focus, these arishadvargas  dissipate in that awareness. As an example when we forget ourselves, we can get angry at people or circumstances. Once we are aware of the emotion of anger that is making us uncomfortable (because it is not our true human nature), in that awareness the anger slowly disappears. Hence awareness is the antidote for the six ills that pester us. Then how do we prevent these six enemies to pop up in our psyche. Forcing the bad qualities out is a difficult task since the mind always drags you back in retaliation like the alcoholics desire to drink alcohol.  When the alcoholic addict forcibly stops drinking suddenly, he constantly dwells in thoughts of alcohol, though not drinking. They use the term dry Drunk for this.

Instead of trying to force bad out, if we flush in the good human qualities of truth (sathya), righteousness (dharma), peace (shanthi), love (prema), non-violence (ahimsa) and sacrifice (thyaga) the bad six qualities gradually disappear and good only remains.  In the presence of these good qualities the six bad qualities do not survive. This process is similar to flushing the toilet where in we flush out the undesirable waste by flushing in with good water. When the good comes in, bad disappears. When the bad comes in good disappear. Rama and Kama cannot co-exist together. This is the value of good company (Sat Sangh) in early stages of spiritual journey.

VIKSHEPA DOSHA: This can be resolved by stilling the mind through namasmarana, dhyana yoga and bhakthi yoga.  Minds occupation is to dwell on thoughts. Thoughts make up the mind like yarn make the cloth. Most worries and agitations of mind stem from memories of past and worries about the future. These worries makes us lose the present. Living now with full awareness stills the mind so is ceiling on desires and moderation and middle path.

AVARANA DOSHA can be cleared  by getting rid of ignorance (avidya) by jnana yoga. A transparent intellect will make the seeker get this knowledge through revelation. The cosmic knowledge that is all pervading reveals to a transparent intellect. In order to learn we first need to un-learn the mis-information and mis-concepts. Once this unlearning is complete with pure awareness the real learning spontaneously happen on a pure heart.

EXAMPLE OF MALA, VIKSHEPA AND AVARANA DOSHAS:  In order to see the reflection of the Sun (Ātman) clearly in a lake, the impurities in the water have to be cleared (Mala), the agitations of water have to be stilled (Vikshepa) and the covering leaves on the top of waters have to uncovered (Āvarana). When the water is purified of impurities (Mala), the agitations in water are stilled (vikshepa), and the covering layers are removed (Āvarana), the reflection of Sun (Atman) is seen clearly.

Thus we should uses two tools to combat and win over arishad vargas that cloud our intellect. One by bringing in awareness and another by filling ourselves with the opposite good qualities like Love in the place of hatred, bringing in selflessness in the presence of selfishness and the like.

This AWARENESS is called by several names like witnessing, Constant Integrated Awareness and by new age writers as Living in Now.  All these different terminologies mean the same. They all talk about bringing in presence and awareness to life and living that is spent otherwise in unawareness and forgetfulness.  In this wakefulness we manifest our true self and dissipate our foreign enemies that are pestering us.
Nishkama Karma is a potent weapon that also makes our intellect transparent.  Transparency is purity that leads to unity that leads to divinity.  The process involved are bringing in awareness to living, filling with good, stilling the wavering mind, selfless service and through unveiling the clouded mind though the light of knowledge.

SANATANA DHARMA - BHARAT - BHARATIYAS

BHA (truth) + RAT (lovers).  Here is a country that loves Truth, a country that is based on Truth, a country that believes in Oneness and unity of creation,  a country that points to Unity in its diversity, a country that proclaims “Loka Samasta Sukhino Bhavanthu" meaning “May all the beings in all the worlds be happy", a country that wishes welfare of all of humanity. Indian national emblem has the words inscribed in it “Sathyameva Jayathe” means Truth alone triumphs. Gandhiji called his auto biography as “My experiments with Truth. Lord Vishnu is worshipped as “Sathya Narayana” meaning “All pervading Truth”.

While most countries pray only for their country’s welfare,  Sanatana dharma prays that all the beings in all the worlds be happy. This is the reason why it is said that India is the spiritual heart of this world through its Sanatana Dharma. If the world is a train, India is its engine while all other countries are compartments. In order for the body of the world to function properly, India the heart has to be in good health. In order for the world (train) to move forward India (engine) has to be in good shape.

Then who are Bharatiyas. Truth lovers anywhere in the world are Bharatiyas. They do not have to be born in India alone. Wherever they are born, when they pursue Truth, they become Bharatiyas. They get attracted towards Bharat and its message to the world. While most of the world is Bhoga Bhumi, India still remains Karma Bhumi. If world is a hospital, India is its intensive care unit. One year of life in India is 10 years of experience elsewhere in the world. With all its problems on the surface, deep within there is flow of serene Saraswathi River. Bharath is the Prayag of the world, where diversity merges into Unity.

A visitor to India on landing will be bombarded with the colors, smells, poverty, affluence, density of population, chaotic traffic, honking horns blazing sun,  heat, sweat, dust , trash, mosquitoes, power cuts, loud speakers, wall posters, spittoons of pan, non-functioning queue lines, favoritism, corruption, bureaucracy, lack of respect for time etc. all at once. They immediately feel sorry for themselves and feel why in the world they choose to come to India.

After staying in for few days,  they will come to see a functioning world in spite of utter chaos on the surface. There is what Galbraith described as  “India the Functioning Anarchy”. After staying much  longer the visitor touches the heart of India, which is pure love. Pure connectivity. Those that connect to this spiritual core,  see the true India, true Bharat. A country that has the undercurrent of spirit flowing through every spec of Bharat. That is why it is said to be Punya Bhoomi.

In Bharat all life is spiritualized. All our samskaras are day to day mundane celebrations,  elevated to higher purpose of life and living. For example Akshrabhyas in all other countries is no big deal. They start with alphabets as a routine. Only in Bharat we start with Ohm Namah – Sivayah. We start the event with primordial vibration of creation. Marriage celebration in most  countries is between boy and girl. After 30 minutes of marriage, the newlyweds leave all the guests behind and go for honey moon. Only in Bharat it is a family affair, community affair and more importantly it is spiritual union of Prakriti (Bride is Lakshmi) and Purusha (Groom is Narayana).  So is every samskara and every  ritual has a higher purpose.

While festivals in other countries mostly except for Christmas, Easter and Good Friday are celebration of historical events like Independence day,  Veterans day, Columbus day,  Mothers day, Father’s day. In Bharat most festivals are spiritualized community celebrations. While samskaras are family celebrations for higher purpose, festivals are community celebrations for higher purpose.  In Bharat Spirituality is the undercurrent like the river Sarawathi. Connecting to this under current is the task at hand for all Bharatiyas. Let us re-dedicate ourselves to connect to this spiritual undercurrent of Bharat on this 64th Republic Day of Mother India. LOKA SAMASTA SUKHINO BHAVANTHU. JAI HIND.

UNIVERSITIES OF INNER SCIENCES - WITHOUT WALLS

When one desires to excel in outer sciences, people all over the world look to the west to go to universities of excellence like the Harvard, Stanford, Oxford , Cambridge and the like.  The equipment used to study is mostly is outer equipment, mind and senses. We use processes of the five senses, namely seeing, hearing, touching, smelling tasting in the exploration. Highest reward is a Nobel prize.

In similar fashion if one desire to excel in inner sciences one needs to turn towards India. In India each Rishi like Valmiki, Vyasa. Atri, Bharadwaja, Sankarachaarya and the like are the universities without the walls. In these universities the teachers are scientists,   the students are research scholars, the subject of study is inner sciences. Free of cost to all.  Equipment used is sixth sense (third eye) that opens up when the five senses and mind are stilled.  Short term reward is peace and joy and final reward is Self realization (ultimate, unending happiness).

When one develops self realization they conquer both the outer and the inner world. They get connected to totality of creation, to cosmic knowledge and cosmic energy. In this state one becomes the Universe, not separate from it. That is full expansion of the limited self.

SERVICE - FOR ONE'S OWN GOOD

Purity and ego sublimation are essential in self-realization. Unison of thoughts-words-deeds is purity. In Sanskrit it is called Trikarana Suddhi (Chitta Suddhi). It can also equate to transparency that is attained by getting rid of the six enemies of mankind namely, desire-anger- miserliness- lust – ego- envy (arishadvargas of kama- krodha-  lobha- moha- mada- matsarya). Once these inhuman qualities dissipate, transparency develops. This is the child like state, pure state.

Ego that is one of the six enemies is the final obstacle for realization. Ego has a purpose initially, that is to develop individuality, setting and achievement goals. When this purpose is done or exceeded, it becomes a hindrance for further expansion ourselves.  WE use a boat t cross the river. After crossing the river you leave the boat and go. It will become a hindrance if carry that on our back even after reaching the shore.

At this stage we need to learn how to sublimate ego to attain further expansion to our full potential.  Upanishads declare “Thyagenaike Amrutatva Manasu” meaning that only through sacrifice that we attain immortality. This thyaga is not material passions as most believe, but the sacrifice of ego (mind’s identification with body called AHANKAR). Service is the one of the best ways to sublimate ego.

Selfless-Service is the way to develop purity. Service is typically mis-understood as for the benefit of the recipient. It is actually for the spiritual refinement of the giver of service. It is an exercise in expansion from our limited self to include others in our body. When we feed the hungry, our hunger is satisfied.  In this expansion process through giving and service, we become porous. This attitude of oneness may or may not be there to start with.  But as we continue to do service the right attitude slowly dawns in. We imbibe the positive human qualities like love, compassion, caring. In the presence of these positive qualities the six negative qualities slowly disappear to make us purer and purer. The final enemy to leave is ego.  It is said that Rama and Kama cannot co-exist. Where there is Rama there will not be Kama and vice versa. As an example when Sita desired for golden deer, she lost association with Rama.

There are three types of service, physical- material, mental-emotional and spiritual.  For a person that is hungry, his hunger need to be attended to with food first. This is physical service. Connecting with the person and teaching him skills through education is mental/emotional service. Further education towards enlightenment is spiritual service. It has to go in that order.

Selfless -Service (Nishkama Karma) dissipates our negative qualities and makes us transparent. When negative qualities dissipate our positive qualities like truth-righteousness-peace-love-non-violence-sacrifice that are our innate natures manifest.  It helps  us expand to our full potential. It helps the helper more than the recipient.  According to Veda Vyasa

The Essence of Eighteen Puranas is
                                                     HELP EVER - HURT NEVER”

ACTING - REACTING: BHAGAVATA LESSON

Puranas are case histories of Vedas. Puranas bring the esoteric statements of Vedas that can only be understood by learned few, to the level of common man in the form of easily understandable  stories. These case histories clarify the values of Vedas. Here is one such case history of acting vs. reacting.

Life presents with two kinds of events. Things that can be changed and things that can not be changed. With the things one can change, one should put 110% effort and gracefully accept the results (nishkama karma). With the things inevitable like the aging, death and the like, we should learn to gracefully accept it and make the best use of our remaining abilities to do as much good to the society as possible, find salvation and peace at the end. Here are two examples . One who mis-managed and the one who properly dealt with.

Both Kamsa and Parikshit were cursed to death.  One after more than 9 years (through child from 8th pregnancy of Devaki) and the other one in 7 days.  With impending death Kamsa  reacted with emotion of fear and Parikshit acted through discrimination of intellect and acceptance of ultimate reality.

Kamsa tried to avoid the inevitable by developing hatred and killing all the new born children.  Inspire of this he ultimately faced with death and died in fear. On the other hand Parikshit after being cursed, fearlessly did introspection,  accepted the reality of death and made best use of the left over  time. He approached sage Suka, listened to Bhagavata and attained Moksha.

Life presents these choices to us frequently. These two examples in Bhagavata are examples on right and wrong way, acting and reacting. Let us act rather than react.

MIDDLE PATH - MODERATION

Moderation is the middle path. It is a path between the opposites. This is a path between dwiita and adwaiita. This is the path of stitaprajna. This is a path of moderation. In this path we travel and function in the world, but not off the world. This is functioning with mind in the Himalayas and hands in the world. This is also functioning with the heart leading the head and hands.

Buddha meditated for 12 years on extremes and discovered the middle path is the way to salvation. Everything in nature follows middle path. Inside our bodies this middle path is called homeostasis. For example in bones there is a balance between bone production and destruction. There is a balance between blood production and destruction.

Truth usually lies in the middle. As long as we are functioning and seeing one extreme or the other, we have not touched on truth.  Functioning away from extremes, functioning with harmony with both extremes is the middle path. This also called sama-darsana, samyak darshana. The person who attains this state is called Stita Prajna. This state is described well in 2nd chapter of Bhagavad Gita.

Balanced people are happy people, contented people. These people maintain equanimity. They are well centered. They are like the center of a hurricane. In the ever changing world these are anchored to Atman. In the ever changing world, they are anchored to the changeless Atman.

These Stita Prajnas are a blessing to the world. Their presence contributes peace and joy to the world. They promote human values and uplift humanity.

COMMON GOOD IS OUR GOOD

From one germ cell ectoderm,, endoderm and mesodermic organs of various kinds are formed. Similarly from unity (Hiranya Garbha - Brahma) the world of diversity with trigunas (satwa, rajo and tamas) were  created. Thus every speck of creation has the primordial substance, intelligence and energy embedded in them.

Thus the microcosm and macrocosm are are alike. Several groups of cells in our body work in unison and cohesion for the common good of the body. They all derive their nourishment from the body and work for the good of the body. Their welfare depends on the welfare of the body. If any cell or group of cells forget the common good principle and out-grows selfishly, it is called cancer. This is self destructive for itself and to the total body.

Our lives should be modulated based on this common good principle (Dharma). We derive nourishment from the society and should work for the common good of the society. Our wellness is dependent on the wellness of the society.

This is the Nishkama Karma of Bhagavad Gita and the Sagham Saranam Gatchami of Gwotam Buddha. Any other way is cancer to the society and is self destructive to the individual and harmful to the society.

JOY IN UNION

1/14/2013

When joy is shared joy multiplies many times. If one is on a island and got a million dollars in lottery, but no body to share the joy with is not very happy. The same person in the midst of family and friends to share the joy will be immensely happy. There is joy in sharing. Sharing is union. Union is happiness. When two friends that have not met for 40 years suddenly meet in airport, they forget the surroundings in their union. They become one and experience immense joy. Mothers experience the same joy with children. Conjugal joy at the peak experience is the same joy of union.

In union, boundaries dissolve and merger takes place. Two becomes one. This oneness and union produces joy. The name for this union is Love, expansion love or Divine love.  The more the union, more the experience of this joy and happiness. When all of duality merges into oneness the joy is infinite. This infinite, unending joy is called Ananda (bliss). All celebrations and festivals foster this sharing, giving and togetherness. Thus they help us experience this joy of union, oneness, little by little. These small glimpses of joy through union should  expand ultimately to union of all diversity into our source of absolute Oneness and UNITY. That is Nirvana, Self-realization, Moksha or Liberation.

SWAMI VIVEKANANDA - LEGACY - 150TH BIRTHDAY

January 12, 2013

Fifteen decades ago a saint, patriot and social activist by name Swami Vivekanada (Narendra) gave a call to the sleepy Bharat to awake and arise from their despondency. There was at that time all pervading malice of meekness and weakness in the Indian psyche because of the British rule. People lost self confidence and were looking for a Divine intervention to save them. General feeling at that time was that everything of Indian is inferior to Europeans. This was cultivated by the ruling British that demoralized the Indians in general. It at this juncture in history a pious soul took birth on January 12, 1863, to bring them out of despondency.

SELF CONFIDENCE:

Swami Vivekanada came as a messiah and wake up the masses to the realization they are the divya atma swaroopas and arose them from the slavish perpetual inferiority complex that they are less than others. He said that self-confidence was essential to realize their full potential.

He said:

“Arise, awake and Stop not till the Goal is reached”.

You cannot believe in God until you believe in yourself”.

“Despondency is not religion, whatever else it may be”.

“Books are infinite in number and time is short. The secret of knowledge is to take what is essential. Take that and try to live up to it.

All power is within you. You can do anything and everything. Believe in that. Do not believe that you are weak; do not believe that you are half-crazy lunatics, as most of us do nowadays. Stand up and express the divinity within you”.

“What the world wants is character. The world is in need of those whose life is one burning love--selfless. That love will make every word tell like a thunderbolt. Awake, awake, great souls! The world is burning in misery. Can you sleep? Work unto death--I am with you, and when I am gone, my spirit will work with you. This life comes and goes--wealth, fame, enjoyments are only of a few days. It is better, far better, to die on the field of duty, preaching the truth than to die like a worldly worm. Advance”.

SERVICE:

He preached nothing new except for the emphasis on the practice of what has been all along preached. He questioned where we weree going in search of God. He said God lives in the hearts of all the hungry millions. He called them Daridra Narayanas and the service to them, is service to God. He called this service Daridra Narayan Seva. He wanted us to see the Omni-present Divinity in all. Serving all is serving God. He preached about the service to the down trodden, under privileged. He encouraged all to do service as spiritual sadhana.

He Said:

“Let each one of us pray day and night for the downtrodden millions, who are held fast by poverty, priest craft, and tyranny. Pray day and night for them. I care more to preach religion to them than to the high and the rich. I am no metaphysician, no philosopher, nay, no saint. But I am poor and I love the poor”.

“Him I call a Mahatma (great soul) whose heart bleeds for the poor, otherwise he is a Duratma (wicked soul). Let us unite our wills in continued prayer for their good.

“May I be born again and again, and suffer thousands of miseries so that I may worship the only God that exists, the only God I believe in, the sum total of all souls--and, above all, my God the wicked, my God the miserable, my God the poor of all races, of all species, is the special object of my worship”.

“Who will bring light to the poor? Who will travel from door to door bringing education to them? Let these people be your God—think of them, work for them, pray for them incessantly. The Lord will show you the way”.

“Condemn none: if you can stretch out a helping hand, do so. If you cannot, fold your hands, bless your brothers, and let them go their own way

“So long as millions live in hunger and ignorance, I hold every person a traitor who, having been educated at their expense, pays not the least heed to them”.

“The more we come out and do good to others, the more our hearts will be purified, and God will be in them”.

“In the world take always the position of the giver. Give everything and look for no return. Give love, give help, give service, and give any little thing you can, but keep out barter. Make no conditions and none will be imposed on you. Let us give out of our own bounty, just as God gives to us”.
“I am no metaphysician, no philosopher, nay, no saint. But I am poor and I love the poor. I see what they call the poor of this country and how many there are who feel for them!”

PURITY : SELFLESSNESS:

He proclaimed the power of purity and un-selfishness. He said that power stems from purity and un-selfishness. Power generated by any other means is abuse of power. One Gandhi, one mother Theresa, one Martin Luther King and one Abraham Lincoln made such a huge difference in the world. This is because of their purity and un-selfishness. It is not the quantity that counts, it is the quality of character.

He said:

“Give me few men and women who are pure and selfless and I shall shake the world”.

“Truth, purity and unselfishness—wherever these are present, there is no power below or above the sun to crush the possessor thereof. Equipped with these, one individual is able to face the whole universe in opposition”.

“The essential thing in religion is making the heart pure; the Kingdom of Heaven is within us, but only the pure in heart can see the King. While we think of the world, it is only the world for us; but let us come to it with the feeling that the world is God, and we shall have God”.

“Take up one idea. Make that one idea your life--think of it, dream of it, and live on that idea. Let the brain, muscles, nerves, every part of your body, be full of that idea, and just leave every other idea alone. This is the way to success, and this is the way great spiritual giants are produced. Others are mere talking machines”.

“Mind you, this is life's experience: if you really want the good of others, the whole universe may stand against you and cannot hurt you. It must crumble before your power of the Lord Himself in you if you are sincere and really un-selfish”.

“Are you unselfish? That is the question. If you are, you will be perfect without reading a single religious book, without going into a single church or temple”.

“To devote your life to the good of all and to the happiness of all is religion. Whatever you do for your own sake is not religion”.

RATIONAL APPROACH TO RELIGION:

He revitalized the Sanathana Dharma and propagated it in the west like no other saint of his times. His scientific mind and rational approach to spirituality attracted millions of youngsters. His speeches compiled in 9 volumes as “Complete Works of Swami Vivekananda” is a must read for any young Hindu. I strongly recommend that every Hindu child and parent should read these 9 volumes. This helps them develop understanding of the uniqueness and the tenets of Sanathana Dharma.

He wants us to be scientific and rational thinkers. He condemns superstition and blind practices that are not understood satisfactorily by the seekers.

He said:

“The moment I have realized God sitting in the temple of every human body, the moment I stand in reverence before every human being and see God in him—that moment I am free from bondage, everything that binds vanishes, and I am free’.

“Superstition is our great enemy, but bigotry is worse”

“I will abide by my reason, because with all its weakness there is some chance of my getting at truth through it. We should therefore follow reasons, and also sympathize with those who do not come to any sort of belief, following reason”.

“Experience is the only source of knowledge. The same methods of investigation which we apply to the sciences and to exterior knowledge should be applied to religion. If a religion is destroyed by such investigation and found it was nothing but a useless and unworthy superstition; the sooner it disappeared the better. Why religions should claim that they are not bound to abide by the standpoint of reason no one knows. For it is better that mankind should become atheist by following reason than blindly believe in two hundred million gods on the authority of anybody. Perhaps there are prophets, who have passed the limits of sense and obtained a glimpse of the beyond. We shall believe it only when we can do the same ourselves; not before. It is said that reason is not strong enough, that often it makes mistakes. If reason is weak why should a body of priests be considered any better guides?”

“The goal of mankind is knowledge. . . . Now this knowledge is inherent in man. No knowledge comes from outside: it is all inside. What we say a man "knows," should, in strict psychological language, be what he "discovers" or "unveils"; what man "learns" is really what he discovers by taking the cover off his own soul, which is a mine of infinite knowledge”.
“If superstition enters, the brain is gone”.

“Knowledge can only be got in one way, the way of experience; there is no other way to know”.
“We must be bright and cheerful. Long faces do not make religion. Religion should be the most joyful thing in the world, because it is the best”.

“To believe blindly is to degenerate the human soul. Be an atheist if you want, but do not believe in anything unquestioningly”.

STATUS OF WOMEN:

As a reformer he wanted woman’s status in the society should be improved. He felt that when woman advances, the whole country advances with them. He said it was not enough to pray goddesses in the form of Shakthi, Lakshmi and Saraswathi. We should respect and revere the voluble role they play in mentoring the children and in fostering unity of family, in addition to the poorly appreciated multi-tasking they do, day in day out at home.to a question.

While addressing a women's group in Chicago he defined the status of women in India in answer to a question. He said: that ideal of woman in the east is a mother and the ideal woman in the west is a wife, He depicts a very sharp intellect with brevity and profoundness of his statements. Above one is an example of it.

“Woman has suffered for eons, and that has given her infinite patience and infinite perseverance”.

“Women will work out their destinies—much better, too, than men can ever do for them. All the mischief to women has come because men undertook to shape the destiny of women”.

GROWING INSIDE-OUT:

He suggests us to grow inside-out. He wants our inner purity drive our outer activities. He jokingly commented that the Easterners keep inside clean and throws the dirt outside and the westerner keeps the outside clean and brings the garbage inside. This statement has spiritual significance that inner purity is more essential and that should drive and spiritualize all our activities.

He said:

“You have to grow from the inside out. None can teach you, none can make you spiritual. Goal what he "discovers" or "unveils"; what man "learns" is really what he discovers by taking the cover off his own soul, which is a mine of infinite knowledge.  There is no other teacher but your own soul”.

“The sages are often ignorant of physical science, because they read the wrong book—the book within; and the scientists are too often ignorant of religion, because they too read the wrong book—the book outside”.

“Learning and wisdom are superfluities, the surface glitter merely, but it is the heart that is the seat of all power. It is not in the brain but in the heart that the Atman, possessed of knowledge, power, and activity, has its seat’.

“Experience is the only teacher we have. We may talk and reason all our lives, but we shall not understand a word of truth until we experience it ourselves”.

“All power is within you. You can do anything and everything. Believe in that. Do not believe that you are weak; do not believe that you are half-crazy lunatics, as most of us do nowadays. Stand up and express the divinity within you”.

“The first sign that you are becoming religious is that you are becoming cheerful.

“Knowledge is inherent in man. No knowledge comes from outside: it is all inside”.

 BE FEARLESS : BE STRONG:

He encourages us to be strong, forcible and fearless. He says kingdom of God will be inhabited only by the strong. He further states meekness and weakness is not religion. Fear is faithlessness. Faith is fearlessness.

He said:

“The moment you fear, you are nobody. It is fear that is the greatest cause of misery in the world. It is fear that is the greatest of all superstitions. It is fear that is the cause of our woes, and it is fearlessness that brings heaven in a moment”.

“Stand up, be bold, be strong. Take the whole responsibility on your own shoulders, and know that you are the creator of your own destiny. All the strength and succor you want is within yourselves. Therefore, make your own future”.

“Freedom can never be reached by the weak. Throw away all weakness. Tell your body that it is strong, tell your mind that it is strong, and have unbounded faith and hope in yourself”.
“Don't look back—forward, infinite energy, infinite enthusiasm, infinite daring, and infinite patience—then alone can great deeds be accomplished”.

“Brave, bold people, these are what we want. What we want is vigor in the blood, strength in the nerves, iron muscles and nerves of steel, not softening namby-pamby ideas. Avoid all these. Avoid all mystery. There is no mystery in religion”.

“Be strong! … You talk of ghosts and devils. We are the living devils. The sign of life is strength and growth. The sign of death is weakness. Whatever is weak, avoid! It is death. If it is strength, go down into hell and get hold of it! There is salvation only for the brave. None but the brave deserves the fair. None but the bravest deserves salvation”.

“Be brave! Be strong! Be fearless! Once you have taken up the spiritual life, fight as long as there is any life in you. Even though you know you are going to be killed, fight till you “are killed.” Don’t die of fright. Die fighting. Don’t go down till you are knocked down”.

“Astrology and all these mystical things are generally signs of a weak mind; therefore as soon as they are becoming prominent in our minds, we should see a physician, take good food, and rest”.

“All power is within you. You can do anything and everything. Believe in that. Do not believe that you are weak; do not believe that you are half-crazy lunatics, as most of us do nowadays. Stand up and express the divinity within you”.

“The earth is enjoyed by heroes”—this is the unfailing truth. Be a hero. Always say, “I have no fear.”

“You cannot believe in God until you believe in yourself”.

“To succeed, you must have tremendous perseverance, tremendous will. ‘I will drink the ocean’, says the persevering soul; ‘at my will mountains will crumble up’. Have that sort of energy, that sort of will; work hard, and you will reach the goal”.

“Each work has to pass through these stages—ridicule, opposition, and then acceptance. Those who think ahead of their time are sure to be misunderstood’.

Today 1/12/2013 is the 150th birthday of this great saint. His still lives in our hearts through his message. With the state of affairs in India at the moment where criminals rule the country, corrupt leaders in prison winning elections with bumper majority, money and liquor deciding the outcome of elections, where anarchy rules, gloom and helplessness abounding, his message is particularly has more relevance.

He calls upon each one of us not be silent spectators.  He wants us to get involved, do our share to protect mother India and preserve its culture. He encourages us to be pure and unselfish that will unleash the divine power in each one of us to become a formidable force of transformation. On this day let us dedicate ourselves to this sacred task. This will be a greatest birthday gift that we can offer to this great son, saint, patriot and social reformer of mother India.

SELF RELIANCE - LESSON FROM DR. SAFAYA

Life offers continuous learning opportunities from all things, all happenings and all people around us. We should only be receptive to these teachings by keeping our hearts pure, minds empty with no pre-conceived notions and through a process called active (receptive) listening.  Life’s most important lessons could be learnt from the most trivial events or from an inconspicuous source or from a conspicuous source. Let me share an example of such lessons I learnt from Dr. Safaya who was the then Director of Sri Sathya Sai Super Specialty Hospital (SSSH), Puttaparthy.

It was the time in the 90s when I was leading the overseas medical service camps at Puttaparthy as medical director. We used to go as an international team of medical professionals from around the globe, consisting of 150-200 members to Puttaparthy for medical service at Prashanthi Nilayam. Typically we went during the peak seasons like birthday and Gurupurnima celebrations and served around the clock for 1-2 weeks. We used to take medical supplies with us and worked in shifts.

While we took with us most of the supplies, we depended on transportation vehicle (ambulance) from ashram and for some additional supplies from super-specialty hospital. We were not getting the co-operation from the ashram authorities for getting one of the ambulances garaged at the ashram and occasionally to get some supplies from Sri Sathya Sai Super Specialty Hospital. I was baffled by this so called non-cooperation by ashram authorities for the needs of our service project. I brought my concern to the notice of Dr. Safaya. It was then I was taught one of the most important lessons of my life.

He simply asked me couple of questions. He asked me under whose request we started service work in Puttaparthy. I said on our own, voluntarily with Swami’s permission obtained through Dr. Goldstein. Safaya said that we wanted to do service for which Swami in his grace consented, not the other way around in which Swami requested and we agreed. He said when we as devotees desire to do service, he questioned why are we depending on others help. He advised us to be self reliant and not depend on anybody.

This simple statement of Dr. Safaya opened my eyes. I immediately took this to heart. I hired a Maruthi van from Bangalore, got the seats removed and converted it to make it an ambulance. I opened an account in a whole sale pharmacy in Bangalore and arranged for constant flow of additional supplies from Bangalore as and when we needed them. Thus we cut our dependence on ashram authorities for ambulance and super-specialty hospital for additional supplies. We did this from then onwards with every medical camp. We started to inquire with both general and super-specialty hospital about their needs and started providing those needs with voluntary contributions by our team members. Example of such contribution is like the backup generator and ultrasound equipment for the general hospital and Echo equipment and other supplies to the super specialty hospital.

Once we became self reliant and be of help to them, instead of a drain on their resources, there is quantum shift in the attitude of the ashram authorities as well as with super-specialty hospital authorities. There is paradigm shift in our attitude of service. That is we now learnt to do service that is fully self reliant. We decided only to give but not seek help from others. We used this important life lesson in all the projects we have undertaken at Prashanthi Nilayam and later on in all our medical service activities in Texas, USA.

I am grateful and thankful to Dr. Safaya whom I consider is one of my mentors in teaching this important lesson of self reliance. This lesson is not just for service work.  it is a life lesson in all circumstances and in all events. At the end of each day I now evaluate, if I give more than I received that day.

Life is a water bubble. While this water bubble lasts we should be giving more and more to the people and society around us. At any moment we are destined to leave this world we should leave with a positive balance of giving rather than with negative balance of receiving.

Dr. Safaya left this physical abode today (Jan, 10, 2013) to expand into Omnipresent abode of Oneness. Thank you Dr. Safaya for this important life lesson of self reliance. You are one of my mentors. I Love you. You live in the memories of all of us, for ever.

LOVE ALL - EVEN YOUR ENEMY

Love is the emotion of creation. God loved himself and created the world to see himself in the world. Thus unity manifested into diversity. The cause of this manifest world of duality is Love of the un-manifest unity. Love is our inherent nature, our source. We feel most at peace when we are loving others and when we are the object of love. Love is expansion. Expansion is love. Infinite expansion to include totality of creation is Divine love. Hence we should begin with loving the mother, father, teacher, siblings, spouse, children, expand it to include the community, state, country, world and everything in creation. When we are suffused with love inside, we experience a very loving world outside. “Yad Bhavam Tat Bhavathi”. As you think, so you become declare Upanishads. World is a mirror in front of us.

To the contrary hatred is very damaging to the individual and to the society. It is like cancer. Once it enters into our mind, it destroys our sense of discrimination and destroys us. The harmful effects of hatred spread to the community and to the world at large. Any seed of hatred in us has to be addressed and removed, before it causes destruction of our psyche. It is a weed that needs to be promptly removed. Best way to get rid of hatred and anger is to be aware of its presence. In the presence of its awareness the hatred and anger does not survive. The other technique is to suffuse our self with love and in its presence, hatred/anger dissipates.

It is particularly important not to harbor any hatred towards anybody, even towards our enemies. When we practice to be loving, after a while we become spontaneously loving.  Love all (advesta sarva bhootanam declares Krishna in Gita). Loving all is full expansion to our true potential. We can ill afford to hate our enemy. Jesus said love your enemy. Most of us think how is it possible to love a hateful enemy? It is because we cannot afford to hate our enemy. Hating somebody is constantly thinking about his undesirable qualities. When we hate our enemy as per “yad bhavam tat bhavaathi” we soon will acquire the hateful qualities of our enemy. Thus we become our enemy.

In order to prevent this happening, we should instead love our enemy. Loving our enemy makes us focus on the spark of goodness in our enemy. When we love our enemy, we ignite the spark of goodness in otherwise a difficult person. This is the very basis for Mahatma Gandhi"s Satyagraha. Thus best way to protect ourselves from the harmful thoughts of our enemies is to love them. Love disarms the opponent and acts as a protective shield around us. It transforms them into better human beings. we love others for our own sake, not for the sake of the other person. Loving others helps us. As we expand ourselves in love, we become more and more peaceful and joyful. This ushers in ananda which is the goal of even the worldly life, leave alone the spiritual life. Love is the antidote for hatred and anger. It is a tonic for peace, joy and happiness. LOVE ALL.
